Unlike the hand-painted butterflies or the colourful dolphins, this fish celebrates the natural beauty of the wood itself. The grain is the decoration—swirling, flowing, telling the story of the tree it came from. The shape is simple and elegant, recognisable as a fish without being overly detailed. It's the kind of piece that works in any room: living room, bedroom, bathroom, or home office.
Each fish is carved from reclaimed pine—timber saved from old buildings, furniture, or offcuts that would otherwise go to waste. I love using reclaimed wood for these pieces; it gives the fish a history, a second life. The grain is often more interesting than new timber, with knots, mineral stains, and subtle colour variations that tell a story.
I cut the fish shape using a scroll saw, then spend hours sanding—first with coarse grit, then finer and finer until the wood feels like silk. The front is left natural, finished with Danish oil to enhance the grain and protect the wood. The reverse side is hand-painted in a soft, complementary colour—often pale blue, seafoam green, or warm ochre—so the fish looks beautiful from both sides when it spins in the window.
Thread a piece of fishing line or thin ribbon through the small hole at the top, and hang your fish in a sunny window. When the light hits it, the grain glows, and the fish seems to swim in the air. It's a calming presence—a reminder of the sea, of slow-moving tides, of the peace that comes from being near water.
These fish make wonderful gifts for beach lovers, for nurseries (they're light and safe), for anyone who needs a little more calm in their life. They're subtle enough to fit any decor but distinctive enough to be noticed.
It varies! I typically paint the reverse in soft sea colours—pale blue, seafoam green, warm sand, or soft coral. If you have a preference, mention it in the order notes and I'll do my best to accommodate.
Yes—every single one. I cut, sand, and finish each fish by hand in my Hebden Bridge workshop. The grain patterns vary because each piece of reclaimed pine is unique.
Use thin fishing line, clear thread, or ribbon. Tie one end through the small hole at the top of the fish, and the other end to a curtain rail, suction cup hook on the window, or a small nail. The fish will spin gently in the breeze.
Absolutely. I post all my handcrafted gifts anywhere in the UK using Royal Mail. Each fish is carefully wrapped to ensure it arrives safely. Delivery typically takes 3-5 working days.
