"I make handcrafted mobiles from solid woods—the spiders are Rosewood and Oak, hanging from a slice of raw Pine. They spin and dance with the air, and they look amazing in any room or by a window."
This spider mobile is one of my most intricate creations. Unlike the small figurines and boxes, this piece is designed to move—to respond to the slightest breeze, to spin gently, to cast shifting shadows on the wall. It's part sculpture, part kinetic art, and entirely handmade.
The central branch is a slice of raw pine, left natural to show its grain and knots. From it, fine threads suspend multiple spiders, each carved from Rosewood or Oak. The dark richness of Rosewood contrasts beautifully with the pale, rustic pine. The Oak spiders are warmer, more traditional. Together, they create a mobile that feels both eerie and beautiful.
Each spider is carved individually—legs, body, head. The legs are delicate, almost thread-like, but surprisingly strong. I use a combination of scroll saw and hand carving to achieve the fine details. The bodies are smooth and rounded, sometimes with subtle texture to suggest an abdomen. The spiders aren't realistic in a scientific sense; they're stylised, almost folk-art in feel. But they're instantly recognisable, and they capture the essence of these eight-legged creatures.
The spiders hang at different heights, so they move independently when the air shifts. In a sunny window, they cast web-like shadows that dance across the room. Hung above a bed or in a corner, they create a focal point that draws the eye and sparks conversation.
While the spider mobile is especially popular around Halloween, many customers display it year-round. It suits gothic, witchy, or eclectic decor styles, but it's also simply a beautiful example of kinetic woodworking. Children love watching the spiders spin; adults appreciate the craftsmanship. It's whimsical without being childish, eerie without being frightening.
Because the mobile is handmade and quite intricate, I only make a few each year. Each one takes several days to complete—carving the spiders, sanding them smooth, balancing the threads so the mobile hangs evenly. When they're gone, I might not make more for months. If you want one, don't wait too long.
Yes—every single spider, the branch, and the entire assembly. I carve each spider by hand, balance the mobile so it hangs correctly, and tie every thread individually. No two mobiles are exactly alike.
The spiders are delicate but sturdy. The legs are the most fragile part—don't grab or squeeze them. As long as you handle the mobile by the top string or the branch, it will last for years. I've had mobiles hanging in my own home for over a decade.
I recommend indoor use only. Moisture and direct sunlight will damage the wood and the threads over time. Hang it in a window, from a ceiling hook, or in a covered porch at most.
Absolutely. I post all my handcrafted gifts anywhere in the UK using Royal Mail. The mobile is carefully disassembled or packed in a large box to ensure it arrives safely. Delivery typically takes 3-5 working days.
